A Little Spa-Like Luxury in the Master Bath

It must be getting close to spring.  I’m wanting to tweak, change, re-arrange; tweak, change, re-arrange; tweak, change, re-arrange; (this could be a song, with a good beat put to it); oh yeah, and clean.

And, while I’m on this whole master re-do kick, I keep standing in the doorway of my master bath with a perplexed look. Something had been missing….I just couldn’t figure out what.  Then, eureka!  It all just clicked and now I’m a happy girl.  Details, details, details, I know. It’s the little things, right?

O.K. back up with a little history.  Here is my tub area in the master bath.  It’s an airbath which I absolutely love.  When you are in it, it’s like soft fizzy effervescent bubbles surrounding you.  I like it soooo much better than the whirlpool tubs I used to have.

It’s surrounded by marble tile and tumbled stone on the wall surround.  The arch is gold-leafed and the chandy is bronze and crystal.  One of my favorite architectural pieces in the whole house is the etched cherub glass that resides over the tub. It is actually  between the bathroom and my dressing room.   It’s hard to photograph because of the natural light that floods in from the real window behind it in the dressing room.

Hubby and I found this etched glass cherub piece in a Louisville antique mall before we even built the house.  It was actually part of a door and dates to the 1910s or 1920s.  We weren’t sure what we were going to do with it,  but you guys know there are some things you run across when you are antiquing and you know you have to buy them.  We knew we’d never see anything like it again.

From the dressing room side:

It was my husband’s idea to use it in the wall between these two spaces, because we had seen a similar treatment in the bed and breakfast inn we stayed at when we married in Napa Valley.  It is flanked by mirrored sconces with pewter fittings that came from Pierre Deux. 

On the back of the tub there’s a favorite large vintage cherub statue and the largest size real clam shell from my collection.

I’ve had these very tall plants on either end of the tub for a while now and I wasn’t happy with the “look” anymore.  I’ve moved them on and off, on and off.  It was too bare without them.  Yes, different accessories, too.  I’ve tried many things on this tub surround over the past 6 years!

 

I finally decided I needed a vintage ladder that I could display towels on.  That’s it, I thought. Wrong. I couldn’t find the right one.

Then it struck me that I had a vintage French train rack.  Once up, I knew it was the right piece. I love how it looks.   

A few towels, mercury glass, candles,  soaps, and a vintage etched pie-crust mirror and it creates a spa-like atmosphere all at once.  It’s not completely finished, but it’s getting there.

No, it’s not hanging crooked. Must be the camera angle. I actually used a level!!!

The hand-applied quote  on the wall says, “The heart that loves is always young”.
