A Smidgen of Halloween

I don’t decorate much for Halloween anymore.  I did when my children were little.  I actually used to go “all out”.  But now, I tend to focus more on Fall time.

I like to find interesting vintage pieces to use when I decide to sprinkle some Halloween fun around the house.

I have a very special “one-of-a-kind” lighted witch that my mother made in the late 1970s.  It has a switch on the back with a nite lite inside that lights up the pumpkin’s face.

Do any of you remember the ceramic “craze” in the 1970s?  A friend of ours had a kiln and we would take ceramic classes and paint lots of decorative items.  We even had a Christmas tree full of hand-painted ceramic ornaments.  My mom and I had so much fun doing this together.  We have since gotten rid of most of these items.  But I’ve always hung on to this witch.  My mom did a wonderful job painting her.

I found this charming little Jack-0-lantern a few years ago at an antique store.  I say charming because he’s not scary at all.

It’s a vintage planter or candy dish from the Haeger Pottery Company.

Isn’t it fun finding neat little holiday items like this?

The older I get I’m less and less excited about holiday items at the big box stores and more interested in simple vintage.  I’ve also found that I tend to throw away and get tired of what I call cheap, junkier type holiday items that I used to get sucked into buying.

I don’t know…maybe I’m an old fogey.

Here’s to good vintage and all the little ghosts and goblins that will be ringing our doorbells this week in search of treats!

Blessings,

Kim

I don't think you are an old fogey, I agree with you! I did several ceramic things back in the 70's and have given them all to my daughter. However, now that you mention it, I remember a scarecrow that I did that I don't see at her house, will have to ask about that. LOVE the witch your Mom did and also the candy dish.

oh yes, my mom and I painted so many ceramic goodies, every week we'd go and make something new. But it WAS lot's of fun to spend that time with my family. I love having holiday pieces with sentimental value. Adorable Halloween things!

Kim, you Halloween pieces are adorable. I'm not into the scary side of Halloween. I only have whimsical pieces, mostly with a folk art and vintage look. I've a few vintage pieces too.
Thanks again for sending me the photos. ~ Sarah

Super cute vignette Kim! I painted ceramics with my mom probably in the late 70's...I still have a few pieces that we did!

Oh- I so remember those plaster/ceramic things. One of my friends actually owned a shop and it was so much fun going in there. I have several pieces that she made-well, did have- I gave most of them to my daughter. Your Mom did a great job on that witch. I remember that form. There was a "haunted house" that matched that witch and my friend had them at her house. I suppose they are all gone now.

I do a bit of Halloween for the grandkids but I do mostly Fall myself. Have a great night- xo Diana

My Mom & I painted ceramics in the 70s - not a lot but I think we still have them all (mostly her). I went all out with the help of my daughter last year with a movie/theatre halloween theme. But this year I was on my on so I just added a few elements to my fall decor. I call mine a "bit of boo".
