I SPY… #1 Shield Shade Lamps

Well, it’s a winter wonderland outside right now in Eastern Kentucky, or should I say a “white out” almost. There’s  probably  6-8 inches of snow on the ground and it’s coming down in big flakes.  Being snowed in means more blogging and projects for me!

I’ve been wanting to do a regular series of things that “I spy” when I’m out and about which I think are either really good bargains, new trends in design, timeless décor and antiques, places of interest, or items that are just plain cool.

It was lamps for me this week and I am lovin’ shield shade lamps right now.  I spied a wonderful pair at Belle Maison Antiques that I am trying to find a spot for in my home.

They are custom-made and have the most stately Italian alter candlestick wood bases.  (More on the French artist, Charles Levier painting they are flanking later. I so happened to have purchased this awesome painting!)

Here is another view in a different location.
This style is an old French style lamp shade and are sometimes known as half shades. They are extremely versatile because they take up less space.  Since they are closer to the wall, you can have more room on the table.  Being open in the back, they have a slimmer profile which make them popular in wall sconces.  They’re a great choice for stairwells and narrow hall spaces.   They also wash the wall in soft light because of the exposed back.

I’m crazy about this small pair with a faded grey base.  They would work well in a bookshelf.

This is a wall sconce with a square half shade.

This next example is from Clark Antique Gallery. It’s a good view to see how the back is made.

They work well on mantels whereas otherwise you might not be able to use lamps. I think the example below from Lonny Magazine makes such a statement in this room.  These are Ooh La La and Trés Chic all-in-one!!!

And, this post wouldn’t be complete without examples from one of my favorite designers, Charles Faudree.  These are from his latest book, Details.

I think these are to-die-for.  I will have to keep thinking about how I can incorporate these into my home.  Now it’s time to convince hubby that we NEED a pair (or two!)!!!

Since we are talking about lamps, has anyone seen this pair at Hobby Lobby?  I spied these last week and had to look twice.  They were certainly photo worthy.

Mercury glass bases, burlap drum shades with burlap rosettes. Be still my heart!  My mind is churning. What to do, what to do?

I may have to make a trip back to Hobby Lobby!  I think I might have a lamp problem.  Is there a Lamps Anonymous out there?  So many lamps, so little time. LOL

Until Next Time,
Kim

OK. YOu just completely made my day.

Just yesterday I found myself complaining how the lamp shades I have for two lamps I just purchased just don't exactly work well when pushed to the wall - I have never seen half shades....EXACTLY what I need!

Brilliant! Thanks so much!

You certainly DID spy, yay!

It must be a lamp kinda weekend. I just redid an old lamp yesterday. I'm gonna do a post about it this week. I also did some rearranging in the LR, and I now need another lamp. This sort of shade would be perfect! Thanks for sharing. Have a great week.

Hi Kimberly, I love the shield shades too. When we were in Venice there was a shop with a window full of gorgeous ones. The only problem was the cheapest ones were $300!! xo, Sherry
