I’m Taking The Plunge This Christmas {Or, I’m Re-Thinking My Christmas Tree…No, Really!}

That’s it.  No more lugging and tugging and lifting and dragging a very large  9 1/2’ tree.  Done.  I’m moving on.  I’m over it.  (You know I’m  just trying to convince myself I’m ready for this.  I’ll use empty nesting as an excuse.  The kids won’t mind. They’ll never notice the difference,  I’m sure!

After writing this post I realized Kim over at Savvy Southern Style is totally with me. Read about it here.  I’m in good company.

That’s decided.

Now what?

I’ll refer to one of my favorite books and authors, Mary Carol Garrity of Nell Hill’s.  She has always impressed me with her ability to use smaller trees in urns on tables and get away with it.  And, they look ridiculously great!  She has given the rest of us permission to actually do this at Christmas of all times.  Can I do this?  And go against all tradition?

Sure I can.

Throughout my relatively short long life, I have a history with Christmas trees.  I love them.  I’ve had multiple trees.  Trees in every room.  Themed trees. Trees in the kids’ rooms.  Large fat trees.  And, my latest, slim & pencil trees.  Foyer trees. Cute trees. Decorator trees. Trees with just the family ornaments. Every color of decorations trees.    Gingerbread trees, nutcracker trees, old world trees, nativity trees, Hallmark ornament trees, UK trees, musical trees…you name it, I’ve probably had it.

Now there’s nothing wrong with that.  It’s just that I’m at a point in my life where I want simplicity and classic elegance all in  one.

So here’s the solution:  Our main family tree becomes a 6’ tree in a killer French urn on an awesome French 3’ table (do the math…that’s 9’ all together….hey, it adds up to my big 9’ tree).  No one will know the difference.  HA!

Am I a Scrooge?  Have I lost the Christmas spirit?  Nah.  I’m just re-directing it.

Change is good.  Just ask me.

Oh, Kim, I LOVE your tree! It is absolutely beautiful! You didn't downsize on style at all. It is fabulous! I have downsized to just one tree...ha!

And it is perfect. Still big without the headache of lugging the giant tree. Love how you styled it and great pot.

That's plenty of tree and downright gorgeous! I gave away three trees this year and scaling back to a couple of small trees, too.

Looks gorgeous Kim, and I so don't blame you for wanting to do the big tree. I was even hesitant on lugging out our tree this year, and I still have kids at home. Of course I did it:) Have a great weekend.

I'm with you Kim! Your tree looks lovely! I love the Nell Hill books, too. I always look through the Christmas one every year.

It seems like a lot of people are going simpler this year. I think I'm doing it because I'm at that age where I feel like I've had a work out after getting the bins down to decorate and then back up to the attic to get them out of the way! I'm also finding that since my decor tastes have changed, it affects what I want to take out and decorate with.

Kim, your tree looks fabulous! Because of our move, I am not even sure if I will have a tree this year! I hope I can, but the house painting doesn't start until Dec 10th.

This is our second year doing small tree (in a bucket)on a table. I am planning on doing one downstairs and a even smaller one in a bucket on a table in the hallway between the kids rooms with only little lights on it.... having an almost two year old and new kitten dictates my design 'style' this year and for a few more to come!

We can get small live trees for less than 20euro....so it all works well with both my lifestyle and budget! ; )

Yours is gorgeous mon amie!
