Décor: A Weekend Bookshelf Project

I finally got around to doing a much needed overdue project in the master bedroom this past weekend.

Remember the nondescript built-in bookshelf that’s actually a hidden door?
Too plain Jane.

Now Ooh La La!

I had some left over toile fabric that was used to cover the inside of the armoire.
It looks a little more beige/yellow in the photos, but it’s the same creamy white in person.

I did this project in about an hour.  I measured the backs of the shelves and cut poster board to size.  I then cut the fabric a little larger and folded it around the back of the poster board like wrapping paper and secured it with tape.  I used masking tape to adhere it to the cabinet back.  So easy to change out.
Here are the 4 panels before I taped them in!

I love the way it turned out!

I’m playing around with styling the shelves.   With it actually being a door (and a heavy one at that), I have to be careful what I put on it.  I can’t put lots of books or anything extremely breakable.  That’s why it tends to look bare.

I definitely think the fabric helps to add some interest.

Now to tackle the shelves in the library.  It will be a much bigger task and I’m not sure yet what fabric I’ll use.
Do you think it might be a different colored toile?
You  know me…

On another note, has anyone seen or tried these candles at Bath and Body Works?  I highly recommend them.  They’re two of my new favorites.

Oh, your cabinet turned out beautifully! I love the fabric you used. I know you're going to have fun styling it.

Beautiful project, I'm going to try it. Regarding the shelves, use earthquake putty under everything you put on the shelves and NOTHING will move, even in an earthquake!

What an amazing secret door! The fabric definitely pops and adds a ton of interest. I also had no idea that there was such a thing as earthquake putty. Good tip.

WOW, that really works! I like white, but I think you were right, it needed a little sumpin' sumpin' like that fabric. I also love how you did the inside of the armoire. Or did it come with the shelves already lined? That never would have occurred to me! (Probably b/c my armoire is usually a big messy jumble of clothes so you can't ever see the shelves!)

Kim, that looks FABULOUS!!!

Wow, what a great idea!

As for the candles, I loved the Frenchie one, didn't see the London one but would buy the other again in a heartbeat!

Kim, this looks great. Makes me want to do that to our living room book shelves. One idea for your "door" shelves is to use museum putty. It would secure things.

The toile is the perfect touch, Kim. I'm a candle lover. Tea and lemon, hmmmmm.

I was at a fabric 'puce' a few weekends ago and saw a wonderful piece of pink and black toile....I passed on it and am now regretting it. I just couldn't think at the time of what I would do with PINK--but now having not bought it I can think of a dozen uses (mais bien sur!!)

That is a fabulous project mon amie! Thank you for sharing it!

xx!

That looks great, Kim! I love the toile! I did the glass door cabinet in my kitchen the same way, except I used packing boxes {since we had just moved at the time and that was what I had on hand}. I still love how it looks and it really made a nice difference to the plainness that was there.

I too am CRAZY for toile! I have a nice little stash of my favorite toile that I just finished making a pillow with today. My Father made me some free standing cabinets I've put in my kitchen and I have all my supplies set up to back it with the toile this weekend. Then to come to your site and see it done on your bookcase let's me know my decision to use the toile is the perfect choice! I guess great minds think alike! LOL!

Kim,

Wow! Lucky you to have a secret door! The transformation is gorgeous! I love the toile! Just finished covering chair seat cushions and covered the back of a nondescript wood window with it! Love the molding that you added to the door too! It's wonderful to come up with creative ideas to completely change the look of something. Boy, sure wish I had a secret door to something. I like the minimalist look on the door shelves.

Looks great. I especially like the red against those toile colors. So pretty.
